Is it worth to buy spare wheel covers?

Most of us have their spare wheel in the trunk, while the whole spare set of wheels (or the seasonal set) is hidden in the garage or basement. There is nothing wrong with that, although you may not remember that storage of wheels and tires without special covers makes them more susceptible to harmful outside factors which can affect their state and even make them unusable. Spare wheel covers – characteristics

Spare wheel covers can be bought online or in traditional stores. They are usually made of high quality materials (most often polypropylene)which is resistant to scratching and abrasions. Thus, the resistance to exterior damage is great. In addition, they are not easy to tear. As such, once you buy a spare wheel cover, it may serve you for many years. The covers are available in a huge variety of sizes, so you shouldn’t have any problem with finding the one that matches your wheels. They can be also cleaned easily and even machine-washed. Many covers also have special Velcro elements which ensure the wheel does not tumble around in your trunk. All in all, they are a very convenient and relatively cheap solution for any vehicle owner. What’s more, the manufacturers try to make them not only useful, but also appealing to the eye, so they are often decorated with colorful edges or logos. Now you know the most distinct characteristics of the covers, but why are they worth your time and money?

First things first – securing the wheel is important. The covers are made of materials which are resistant to heat and moisture and thus, your wheel will be too. How is the tire made? That’s a good question? In every car we have to take care of keeping the highest possible quality of parts and elements that are essential to drive the car. Regular replacements of worn out gears is also essential – the responsibility of safely getting to the goal of our journey and making the drive safe for other participants lies on our shoulders.

One of such elements is a tire – the traction depends on it, quality of drive and many other factors that are to be felt by ourselves. Tire is pretty complex element of our car, being made of many precisely matched parts that have specific features – they are permanently bound, thanks to which they serve us in the best way they can. So how the tire is made?

The most important element of tire is its tread – it is an outer part of tire that is responsible for making contact with the surface, called pavement and also for relocating load during the drive. Tire’s tread provides us also with much needed traction, especially when in curves. Moreover, thanks to certain treads we can provide ourselves with more stability while driving. As a consequence it not only has to flexible, but also wear-resistant, getting flat and incoming impacts. Not recommended is quick self-warm-up of the tire. Another of its elements is side wall, being the side of tire, made of rubbery mixture that is pretty soft and its main aim being amortization of the entire tire. It is the side of the tire that protects the entire tire from impacts that might prove deadly for tire’s frame. Another of elements is layers covering and stiffening the tread – they are armed with thin, but very resilient wires that cover the top points of the tire. They are positioned in an aslope way, layered and bonded. What is very important is that these elements have to be stiff and pointing in the direction of tire’s perimeter and as a consequence they will not overspread because of centrifugal force and so the diameter of our tire will be always under control does not matter the conditions of the usage. Moreover, tread’s hardenings have to be immensely tough in transversal direction to stand the drift power but at the same time be enough flexible vertically so as to overcome the obstacles with no difficulties. Next comes ply, also known as tire’s frame that is an inner layer of thin wires and textiles bond with caoutchouc and set in straight arcs. These small elements made of steel are greatly important for the tire’s structure, because they give it resistance to pressure, having their part in preventing its sides’ distortion from happening. What is interesting is that in this area we shall find around 1500 wires – and every one of them can deal with 15 kilos of load. Tire includes also toe guard – its role is to secure a stable connection between tire and rim – because of it there are tires with inner tubes and without. Bead wire makes toe guard properly stiff. There is also enlacement that is set under the tread and reinforcement made of strong rubber and inner caulking layer made of soft caoutchouc. Tire made this way will surely drive as to the destination.


Types of tires

In nearly every vehicle there are different parts of equipment needed, different is also selection of gear depending on the year’s season and conditions in which such gear will be used. That is the way tires are selected and the method of division is a type of tread.

The first type is snow tiree – they are extremely important to give us proper traction during the winter. In their case the tread is indented, thanks to which it gives us a great traction both on wet and slippery road. The important issue is the structure of snow tire – it will be made of a rubbery mixture that has to be soft when the temperature goes down. As a consequence this type of tire is useless in summer, because in high temperature the mixture becomes too soft and wears out quickly. We substitute it with summer tires that are sometimes called All Season tires that have good traction both on dry and wet surfaces and it is made possible by the tread’s carvings. In these kinds of tires there is a very good system of water outlet – it happens during the drive and even fast drives too – broad channels led around the perimeter together with broad side channels are doing a great job during the rain. Thanks to such types of tires the comfort of the drive is leveled up. Helpful is also the fact that the tread pads are pretty big. Regarding the rubbery mixture that the summer tire is made of, it is tough in hot temperature but in the winter its toughness becomes a problem and it is impossible to have a comfortable drive with it. Another type are the all-terrain tires – seem to be quite distinctive, with big tread pads being something really different than in comparison with those of casual tires. These type of tires are much more resilient to getting flat, have thicker tread and tire’s sides and creating them in form of deep and broad channels makes them connect shape with strength. It is a relocation of pretty big driveline moments in difficult terrain conditions for which these tires are made. Yet another type of tire is mud and snow tire. They are much more soft than the all-terrain tires, but compensate this fact with much better traction on slippery surface in comparison to the all-terrain ones. These are the models pretty similar to the all-terrain tire, but the tread pads are even more adjusted to keeping better traction.

Tire change becomes extremely important – especially during the change of seasons – to avoid queues we can decide to have the tires changed even earlier. Besides, freezes and other hostile weather conditions may come earlier than we think so it is better safe than sorry. Correctly chosen tires may turn out to save our life more than once, so we should make sure to have them and have them changed when it will help us control our vehicle better. Of course every vehicle has its own types, not to mention their sizes – their selection will not be difficult though – however should we encounter a problem then we will be advised to consult a professional or pay a visit to a vulcanizer.
